ABOUT

Map of Stories invites audiences to celebrate oral storytelling: one of Scotland’s most deeply-rooted and yet under-appreciated art forms. This project was produced by Transgressive North in partnership with Traditional Arts and Culture Scotland, and was supported by VisitScotland as part of the Year of Stories 2022.

In 2022, TN directors had the privilege of travelling the length and breadth of Scotland to film performances by the country's leading storytellers. These stories are now available to audiences on our new project website, www.mapofstories.scot. Our filmed material is additionally complimented by a curated selection of audio recordings from Tobar an Dualchais / Kist of Riches, of some of Scotland’s most iconic, now-departed storytellers.

The project was launched with a series of live multimedia events featuring storytellers and filmed footage, creating a showcase of unique ‘film ceilidhs’ at the 2022 Scottish International Storytelling FestivalAfter premiering at SISF, each performance went on tour to its region of focus – Dumfries & Galloway, the North East, Perth & Kinross, the Outer Hebrides, and Orkney respectively – and explored the distinctive stories, memories and folklore arising from that particular place.

Every community has its own tales to tell, and Map of Stories invites you to explore the wealth of stories that are emerging from communities and landscapes across Scotland.
